Building A Library Project: Malanday National Highschool

One of the goals of our online bookstore, Porch Reader Philippines, is to help build libraries. It was actually a thought, at first, since we were still considering how we should go on about building little libraries that can be accessed by everyone. Fortunately, we were able to start this project with the help of Ms. Theresa Pacheco, an English teacher from Malanday National High School in Valenzuela City, who was the one who asked their principal to build a library for their students.

Since Malanday National High School was an annex of Polo National High School, it was relatively new. Their facilities were still being built but the classrooms were already being used. What they were lacking was a place where their students can study, read, and access information. Through Ms. Pacheco’s initiative, the school set up a small library area that was in one of the hallways in the second floor of their building. Although small, the students were happy enough to use the space available as well as the books that were given by former students and other donors.

The small space that was originally planned to be the library.

We saw Ms. Pacheco’s request for book donations on her social media account and Lhory and I thought that this may be a good place to start for us. We got in touch with Ms. Theresa and we were able to talk to her supervisor as well. Through the earnings that we gained from the books that we sold last year, we donated money for bookshelves and promised that we will look for reference materials for their students. We could not have done this without our customers which is why we are grateful for their continuous patronage of our little online bookstore.

Part of our donation for the school’s library. These shelves are waiting to house good books for the students.

The school is still in need of book donations and sponsors and the good news is that the school has provided one classroom as a library which they hope will be opened just in time for the start of the school year. Hopefully, we will be able to see the progress of their little library in the months to come.
